UNGODLY soul-ties are Satan’s invisible chains of torment. Breaking these ties is a spiritual battle, but through Jesus Christ, you have power over every bondage to walk in your God-given freedom and surround yourself with godly relationships that honor Him.
They form when we break away from what God has laid down for our relationships. Breaking free from these ties requires prayer, repentance, and the power of the Holy Spirit for deliverance

When we are yoked to someone in an ungodly way, an ungodly soul tie may which keep us under spiritual bondage.
God’s desire is that we walk in freedom in every area of our lives. However, responsibility is ours!
How do ungodly Soul-ties form?
Soul ties are spiritual connections that bind individuals together. Godly soul ties, such as those in marriage, family, and healthy friendships, are ordained by God for unity and strength.
However, ungodly soul ties form when relationships operate outside of God’s design, as stated earlier, thus creating unseen spiritual bondage.
Here are five main ways ungodly soul ties form:
- Sexual Sin & Immorality
Sex is a spiritual act, not just physical. When two people engage in sexual sin (fornication, adultery, pornography,) am ungodly soul tie is created because sex was designed to bond two as “one flesh”
Genesis 2:24, 1 Corinthians 6:16.
Outside of marriage, these ungodly ties become destructive, leaving emotional wounds, soul fragmentation and spiritual oppression.
- Unhealthy Emotional Attachments
Deep emotional bonds can form when relationships become obsessive, manipulative, or codependent. If you rely on someone for validation, identity, or purpose more than God, an unhealthy soul tie develops. This can happen in toxic friendships, controlling parental relationships, or even unhealthy mentorships.
- Covenants, Vows, & Oaths
Soul ties can form when people make verbal or written covenants, such as saying, “I will always love you,” “I can’t live without you,” or “We are forever bonded.” Even ungodly spiritual agreements—such as blood oaths, occult pacts, or unbiblical rituals—can create demonic soul ties that keep a person in bondage.
- Abuse & Trauma
Ungodly soul ties also form through physical, emotional, or spiritual abuse. When a person experiences trauma in a relationship, the soul can become tied to the abuser due to fear, dependency, or manipulation. This often happens in cases of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and controlling leadership in churches or cults.
- Idolatry and Demonic influence
Anything we prioritize above God can create an unhealthy tie. This includes people, places and things. Idolizing celebrities, spiritual leaders, past relationships can form ungodly souls ties.
If someone seeks power, success, or fulfillment through another person rather than God, an ungodly soul tie can form.
Signs you may have an Ungodly Soul tie
Do you find it difficult to move on from a past relationship, even after time has passed?
Are you plagued with constant thoughts, dreams or emotions tied to a person(s) from past relationships and engagements?
Do you feel controlled, manipulated, or bound in a relationship?
Or do you experience unexplainable emotional pain or oppression after interacting with someone in particular?
Are you engaging in sin or compromise because of someone’s influence and you desire to please them?
Freedom from ungodly soul-ties
Galatians 5:1.” It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
As already stated, ungodly soul ties form when we do not love and value people the way God loves and values them.
1 Corinthians 13:33, And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
One way of showing people love is by giving them freedom. Love is freedom!
The ten commandments in Exodus 20:1-17 ,are a reflection of love.
- You shall have no other God’s before me.
- Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images. …
- Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. …
- Remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy. …
- Honor your father and mother. …
- Thou shalt not kill. …
- Thou shalt not commit adultery. …
- Thou shalt not steal.
Burdensome yoke
Ungodly soul ties form when we break the second part of the 10 commandments and then become a burdensome yoke that hinders.
Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
Many people are wearied down with chains of unforgiveness from past relationships…
A yoke holds two people together and they are forced to move to one direction unless the other breaks or they frees themselves from the hold.
If we are yoked with someone and we have formed ungodly soul ties, we end up going in a direction we do not want to go.
Ungodly soul-ties form when we devalue, dishonour and wound people. They form out of jealousy, a desire to control and manipulate.We form an invisible chain that binds us to that person.
Many are wearied down with chains of unforgiveness, they have people sitting on their shoulders. They have got to shake off and break the ungodly soul ties.
When we break away from what God desires out of our relationships we form ungodly souls ties.
When we have ungodly soul-ties, it means we do not have all our soul-mind, emotions, will with us as it is fragmented with pieces of it with the other person or in other places.-
Having ungodly soul-ties mean that whatever is happening to the other person happen to you because you are spiritually yoked, parts of your soul or fragments are with the other person!
Ungodlu souls ties may form between former lovers, employers, people in authority(parents, spouses),places we were rejected in -a part of the soul remains there.
Here are 5 ways to break Ungodly soul ties
- Acknowledge & Repent
Recognize that an ungodly soul tie exists and repent for any involvement in the relationship that was outside of God’s will. Confess any sin, whether emotional, physical, or spiritual, and ask for God’s forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
- Renounce and cut the tie
Verbally renounce the soul tie in the name of Jesus.
Declare that you are severing any unholy connection and breaking any covenant, promise, or attachment that was made. Say:
“In the name of Jesus, I renounce and break every ungodly soul tie between me and [name]. I release myself from every spiritual bondage and declare my freedom in Christ!”
- Remove any point of contact
Destroy, remove, or return any objects, gifts, or mementos that connect you to the person, for example letters, pictures, jewelry, phone contacts,photos. These can serve as spiritual anchors that keep the tie in place (Deuteronomy 7:25-26).
- Renew Your Mind with God’s Word
Replace the emotional and spiritual grip of the soul tie with God’s truth. Meditate on Scriptures like Romans 12:2 (“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind”) and John 8:36 (“Whom the Son sets free is free indeed”).
- Pray for complete deliverance and healing
Ask God to heal any wounds caused by the soul tie and to fill any emotional voids with His love. Pray for the Holy Spirit to restore your soul and strengthen you to walk in purity and freedom.
In a nutshell, you need to take a look at the past relationship and identify it. Confess the sin involved. Remember, forgiveness is key-go ahead and forgive the person involved. Renounce, break and call back soul fragments in prayer.
Prayer to break ungodly soul ties
As you have read this article, I am sure that the Holy Spirit has brought many relationships to your mind that need some attention.
People apparently may have ungodly soul ties with but you were never aware of the existence of such a tie.
Well, God is finally giving you the wonderful opportunity to break these ungodly ties. It may be with a former lover, close friend, parents, relative, doctor, teacher…you are the one who knows what these relationships are.
