"Understand how the Holy Spirit can dwell in your spirit while an evil spirit may oppress your soul. Learn to command deliverance from strongholds and renew your mind for victorious living."

ONE of the most debated questions in the Church today is: “Can a Christian have an evil spirit?”

The confusion often stems from a misunderstanding of how God designed the human being. As we navigate the spiritual realm, we must be educated in the truth: while your spirit is secure in Christ, your soul and body are the "battlegrounds" where the walk of transformation occurs and it is a process (of sanctification).

The Tripartite Man: Spirit, Soul, and Body

To understand deliverance, we must look at 1 Thessalonians 5:23, which prays that our "whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless."

1. The Spirit: The Holy of Holies

When you become born again, your spirit is made brand new (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is the "Holy of Holies" where the Holy Spirit dwells. Light enters here, and darkness is kicked out. In your spirit, you are 100% righteous when you accept Jsus as Lord and Saviour.

2. The Soul: The Mind, Will, and Emotions

The soul is where your personality lives. Unlike the spirit, the soul is not "instantly" perfected; it is in a constant process of mind renewal (Romans 12:1-2). This is the "inner court" where strongholds can remain.

3. The Body: The Outer Court

The body is the physical vessel. It is the part of you that "feels" the impulses of the soul. If the soul is not delivered, the body eventually acts out the sin.

Oppression vs. Possession: The Occupied Soul

A common misconception is that a Christian can be "possessed" (owned) by a demon. This is false. A believer is bought with the price of Christ's blood; the devil cannot own you. However, a believer can be oppressed—meaning an evil spirit has taken up residence in the soul or body.

The "Percolation" of Strongholds

Have you ever seen a pastor who loves the Lord but cannot stop stealing the offertory? Or a devoted intercessor who is suddenly gripped by uncontrollable lust?

  • The spirit says: "I have Jesus in me!" (And they are correct).

  • The soul says: "I am still bound by this stronghold."

  • The body then succumbs.

This is a stronghold—a mental or emotional fortress where a spirit of greed or lust has refused to leave. It is "percolating" from the soul into the body. These are often the same patterns that defeated us before we were saved. They do not automatically vanish at salvation; they must be cast out.

Why Darkness Stays: The Need for Transformation

If we do not actively participate in the walk with God, we leave "empty rooms" in our soul. Luke 11:24 warns that when an unclean spirit goes out, it seeks to return. If it finds the "house" swept but empty (meaning the soul hasn't been filled with the Word and transformed), it brings others with it.

We are called to be transformed2 Corinthians 3:18. This is a gradual movement from glory to glory. If a believer lives an immoral life, they are effectively allowing an evil spirit to occupy the "rooms" of their soul that they have not yet yielded to the Holy Spirit.

What Does Complete Deliverance Look Like?

Deliverance is not just "feeling better"; it is a strategic military eviction. We must submit to God and clear the temple.

1. Legal Ground Removal

First, the believer must repent of the immorality that gave the spirit access. This removes the "legal right" of the enemy to stay in the soul.

2. Commanding the Soul-Level Spirits

Complete deliverance involves commanding the spirits to leave the mind, emotions, and will.

  • "Spirit of Greed, I command you to leave my soul (mind and will) now in the name of Jesus!"

  • "Spirit of Lust, you have no home in my emotions. Out!"

3. Filling the Void (Mind Renewal)

Once the spirit is cast out of the soul, you must occupy that space with the Word of God (Romans 12:2). If you don't renew your mind, the "vacant room" is an invitation for the enemy to return.

The Believer's Victory

You can truly have Jesus in your spirit and still have a "stronghold" in your soul. Do not live in shame; live in authority.

  1. Acknowledge the area of lack of control.

  2. Submit that part of your soul to God.

  3. Command the spirit to leave.

  4. Renew your mind daily through the Word.

Jesus Chirst has secured the "capital"-your spirit. Now, it is time to take back the "territories"- your soul and body.
