IN spiritual warfare, one of the greatest weapons in a believer's arsenal is discernment. We often find ourselves frustrated because we are applying the wrong cure to the right problem. To walk in the victory the Jesus has provided, we must distinguish between what is Carnal (The Flesh) and what is Demonic (The Spirit).
Regardless of the source, there is one universal truth: Both respond to prayer immediately. Whether it is a cry for self-control or a command for deliverance, prayer is the spiritual "first response" that shifts the atmosphere.
The Carnal Nature: The Battle of the Flesh
The "flesh" is the fallen human nature that remains prone to self-gratification. It is the internal resistance to the Spirit of God.
1. The Carnal Responds to Medicine and Discipline
If a condition improves through medical intervention, diet, or exercise, it is likely carnal. The flesh requires crucifixion, not casting out. It responds to a change of location, a change of diet, and sometimes rest.
2. Short-Term Duration
While the flesh is a lifelong battle, specific carnal outbursts are often triggered by temporary circumstances—stress or poor company. When you remove the trigger, the fleshly desire often loses its power.
The Demonic: A Spiritual Intruder
The demonic is an external force that has gained internal access. Unlike the flesh, the demonic does not care about your New Year’s resolutions.
1. The Hallmark of Compulsion
The demonic is compulsive. It is not just a "bad habit"; it is an uncontrollable drive. While the carnal man might struggle with gluttony, the demonic influence feels like being "pushed" by an invisible hand and become a passenger in your own body, losing self-control over actions like fornication, smoking, or outbursts of rage.
2. Resistance to Natural Remedies
The demonic does not respond to medicine. You cannot medicate a spirit of infirmity or "therapy" away a generational curse. While medicine may mask symptoms, the underlying "darkness" remains untouched because the root is spiritual, not chemical.
3. The Power of the Command
Crucially, the demonic responds to commands. Because of the authority of the Word of God, a demon must bow. It does not negotiate with your willpower; it submits to the Word spoken by a believer in the name of Jesus.
4. Generational Patterns and Inheritance
The demonic is often generational. It follows the bloodline. If families die of similar causes at the same age, or if mysterious manifestations (like the extraordinary strength of the Gerasene demoniac) appear, you are dealing with a spirit that has followed an inheritance.
Flesh vs. Demonic Comparison
| Feature | Carnal (The Flesh) | Demonic (The Spirit) |
| Immediate Response | Responds to Prayer | Responds to Prayer |
| Medical Effect | Responds to medicine/rest. | No effect; root remains. |
| Control | Weakness of will. | Compulsive; lack of control. |
| Authority | Responds to discipline. | Responds to Commands. |
| Root Source | Personal appetites. | Inheritance/Bloodline. |
| Pattern | Situational/Occasional. | Recurring/Seasonal/Generational. |
Biblical Case Study: The Demoniac of the Gerasenes
In Mark 5, we see a man under total demonic compulsion. He had mysterious manifestations of extraordinary strength that no chain could hold. He was driven by a spirit that did not respond to human discipline. However, the moment he encountered Jesus, the spirits were forced to respond to a Command. The Word of God overrode the "legal ground" of the demons, and the man was instantly restored.
How to Respond
As a knowledgable believer, you must apply the correct spiritual tactic:
-
For the Carnal: Pray for strength and then Crucify it. Bring your body into subjection through discipline (1 Corinthians 9:27).
-
For the Demonic: Pray for discernment and then Command it to leave. Use the Word of God to break the compulsive cycle and the generational inheritance.
The Cross of Jesus has given you the victory. Whether your struggle is a habit of the flesh or a spirit from your past, appropriate the power of the cross and claim your freedom today.
