SOMETIMES Christians interpret Scriptures in a manner that gives false security of assurance that the devil's snares cannot touch them, so they believe they will not be affected by Satan.
In the book The Triumphant Church by Kenneth Hagin, the writer says, as long as you are born again, Satan will come for you; he tries to attack you using the spirit of fear. It comes in many forms—fear of Satan, fear of the unknown, and so on. This spirit must be dealt with. This is a strategy of Satan.
To walk in true victory, we must bridge the gap between our legal standing in Christ and our daily vigilance on earth. While we are spiritually secure, we are still in an arena of spiritual warfare.
The Reality of the New Creature and the Prowling Lion
A foundational truth for every believer is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." This verse confirms our identity, but it does not promise an absence of conflict. In fact, being "new" makes you a threat to the kingdom of darkness.
As 1 John 4:4 reminds us, "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." However, having the "Greater One" inside you is not a license to be asleep. The enemy remains active, and his primary goal is to convince you that his power is greater than your authority.
The Strategy of Fear
Satan’s chief weapon is the spirit of fear. He knows that fear paralyzes faith. It acts as a spiritual "interference" that prevents you from hearing God’s voice clearly.
-
Fear of Satan: Over-focusing on his power rather than God’s sovereignty.
-
Fear of the Unknown: Worrying about future events that God has already planned for.
-
The Solution: Pray against fear regularly. Do not wait for a crisis to deal with it. Cancel the spirit of fear through consistent, Word-based prayer to maintain your spiritual clarity.
Living as a Soldier on the Watchtower
What should a Christian do knowing the devil prowls around like a roaring lion? The answer is to be self-controlled and alert in every situation—big and small.
The Importance of Deliberation
A soldier in a watchtower doesn't just look for an invading army; he looks for the scout, the smoke, and the small movement in the brush. We must be just as deliberate. The enemy often ignores the "front door" and looks for a side window left slightly ajar.
Consider a practical example: You are prepared to teach Sunday school or lead a ministry meeting. On the way there, a sudden, heated argument breaks out with your spouse or child.
-
The Setup: The enemy creates these "micro-crises" to ruin your peace.
-
The Goal: If he can get you frustrated or angry, he has successfully neutralized your effectiveness before you even open your Bible to teach.
-
The Counter-Move: Recognize the pattern. When an argument feels "forced" or "sudden," stop. Be the soldier who sees the trap and chooses peace over being right.
Do Not Give the Devil a Foothold
Ephesians 4:27 warns us: "For anger do not give the devil a foothold." This is a critical principle for spiritual hygiene. A "foothold" is a small area of legal ground you give to the enemy through sin or unchecked emotion.
Subtle Sins as Entry Points
The devil is a master of subtlety. He uses things we often deem "minor" to influence our lives:
-
Answering back to parents: This breeds a spirit of rebellion.
-
Unchecked Anger: Bitterness acts as a magnet for demonic influence.
-
Casual Dishonesty: Small lies erode the "Belt of Truth" Ephesians 6:14 that protects your core.
When you know your enemy, you realize that he is looking for any small opening. By staying alert to these "small things," you stay a step ahead of his schemes.
Jesus stripped Satan of his authority
While the enemy is persistent, he is not all-powerful. Isaiah 14:5 declares, "The LORD has broken the rod of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers." The scepter represents the legal right to rule. At the Cross, Jesus stripped the enemy of his legal authority over your life. However, like a deposed dictator, Satan will try to exercise power where he has none, hoping you are too ignorant of the law to stop him.
The Power of Being Prepared
Knowledge is your greatest advantage. You are a step ahead of Satan when you know about his tactics before you ever have to confront him. This is why shadowing a mature believer or a deliverance minister is so helpful. By watching how others handle spiritual warfare, you learn:
-
How to spot the devil's footholds.
-
How to apply Scripture precisely to a situation.
-
How to maintain a calm, authoritative spirit during a confrontation.
Take Your Position
The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battleground where victory is already secured—but must be enforced. You are a new creature, and the Greater One lives in you. But you must still be the soldier on the watchtower.
Stop the enemy at the gate. Deal with the spirit of fear. Guard your heart against "small" footholds of anger or rebellion. Remember, you have the authority to cancel every plan of the enemy through the name of Jesus. Stand firm, be alert, and walk in the freedom that has already been bought for you.
