Why many men get battered in life

JUNE, the month we celebrate fathers, often highlights strength, leadership and provision. Yet, beneath the surface, many men are silently bleeding—emotionally, spiritually and psychologically.

Some are broken but can’t say it. Others are battling but can’t explain it. Many are weary warriors, battered not by external failure alone but by internal enemies as well- ego, pride, ignorance, shame and lack of self-control.

Men are targeted

The battle against the boy child did not begin in the boardroom, the bedroom or the bar. It began in the Garden of Eden, when God declared war between the serpent and the seed.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel — Genesis 3:15

The serpent, Satan, has always feared Jesus and the men who would believe, be born-again and begin to walk in purpose—because such men threaten his kingdom. The enemy’s strategy then is to corrupt the man… before he can conquer!

“Mis-define him before he discovers purpose. Distract him with battles that feel like failure, so he never walks in the victory Christ secured for him on the cross,” says the evil kingdom of darkness.

Revelation 12 reveals another battle:

And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child — Revelation 12:4

A woman symbolic of the people of God, birthed by His word, giving birth to a male child (representing Christ and by extension, godly leadership and destiny). The dragon (Satan) waits, poised to devour the child.

This is not just ancient prophecy or an epic portrayal of an active imagination—no, it is the core of an intense spiritual warfare every man born with divine potential has to wage against the enemy and win.

Men’s ministry taking the leap

Invisible barriers and why men fall

Many men are not just dealing with bad choices and the consequences but they are fighting invisible barriers that churches, families and society often has not taught them to discern;

1. Generational curses

Men are unknowingly battling patterns passed down through bloodlines—the unseen inheritance-cycles of failure, addiction, poverty, anger, broken relationships or premature death. These are more than habits, they are spiritual legalities the enemy uses to keep families in bondage.

A generational curse can make a man feel like no matter how hard he tries, something always pulls him back. But in Christ, those curses can be broken.

Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.

But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree — Galatians 3:13.

Through deliverance, repentance and walking in spiritual authority, men can cancel these inherited patterns and walk in generational freedom and blessing.

2. Ego

Ego disguises itself in a man as confidence, but under, it is often just fear wearing a mask. Ego is a false armour. Men with wounded egos avoid correction, hate vulnerability and resist accountability. They strive to prove worth, not realising their value is already secured in Christ.

Ego is often a defense mechanism—a fragile shell men build to survive rejection, failure or inadequacy. But ego is deceptive. It convinces a man to protect an image rather than pursue transformation.

BBI men's ministry
A section of men pose for a group picture after a prayer session at BBI.

To conquer ego, a man must trade image for identity—letting go of who he thinks he should be, and embracing who God says he is. Jesus did not need to prove anything; He lived from the Father’s affirmation: And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased”-Matthew 3:17. Likewise, our value is not in titles, applause, or achievements—it’s in being sons of God.

Ego demands performance; identity releases peace. Jesus is calling men to die to self, not to lose themselves, but to discover their true selves in Christ.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me — Galatians 2:20

3.  Pride

You will hear pride telling men, “You’ve got this. You can handle it. Don’t ask for help.” Then it isolates them from wise counsel, warm fellowship with other men and makes them resist healing, keeping them stuck in cycles of pain. Pride is the silent killer.

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall — Proverbs 16:18

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble— James 4:6

Men must conquer pride through surrender. It may seem paradoxical, but true strength begins at the feet of Jesus. Men are often conditioned to equate vulnerability with weakness, but Scripture shows us that humility is the doorway to grace and elevation.

King Nebuchadnezzar was stripped of his power until he acknowledged God’s sovereignty (Daniel 4), while Jesus—our perfect model—“humbled Himself… and God exalted Him” (Philippians 2:8–9). A man who conquers pride becomes teachable, accountable and unshakably secure in his identity in Christ.

Pride is Satan’s hidden chain of oppression that keeps men from accepting that darkness-lack of Gods light- keeps them in ignorance and that is where the problem is.

4. Ignorance

Many men were never taught how to manage emotions, lead with love or deal with generational cycles as already mentioned.

In Hosea 4:6 God is grieved: my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.

Demonic strongholds and renewal of the mind

Ignorance is not innocence—it is vulnerability. What men do not know is hurting them. The moment you are in darkness it may not be possible to see what the enemy is doing in your life-you are already at a disadvantage.

Lack of knowledge (the absence of light) is not the darkness that is around you but within. It can make one not see what God has made available for their breakthrough. Pride feeds on half truths and can keep men in ignorance for a long time, but thank God that Christ has set us free and made available not only the knowledge but causes us to walk in freedom as well.

Satan fights to keep men in spiritual ignorance according to John 1:5-And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

5.  Shame

Shame tells men they are less-than, broken or too far gone. It makes them hide their wounds and play roles rather than seek restoration. Shame is the unspoken weight many men bear today.

Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame— Psalm 34:5

Christ does not shame us—He restores. Men must conquer shame and must not give it power to speak over their lives! Jesus despised shame and conquered it on the cross. He kept His eyes on honour and that the reward he gives those who conquer.

Shame is more than guilt over what a man has done—it is the lie the enemy uses to say, Because of what you’ve done, you no longer belong. Shame isolates, suffocates, and silences. It causes men to hide behind busyness, bravado, or silence afraid of being exposed.

Deliverance breaks barriers.
The power of the cross of Jesus delivers from shame

But Jesus came not just to forgive sin—but to remove shame. When the prodigal son returned home, covered in failure, the father never shamed him—he embraced him (Luke 15:20–24). That’s the Father’s heart toward every man who feels unworthy today.

In Christ, shame is replaced with righteousness, acceptance, and restoration. You don’t have to wear the labels of your past. You are not what happened to you—you are who God says you are: forgiven, beloved, and restored.

Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame — Romans 10:11

Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land and everlasting joy will be yours-Isaiah 61:7

6. Lack of Self-control

Many men have opened doors to satanic oppression in their lives through self-control. Self- control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), yet it is often underdeveloped in men who have never learnt how to submit their desires to God. The result? Addictions, emotional outbursts, relational sabotage.

Lack of self control causes men to seek false comfort in things, people, places, work rather than in God.

There are many areas men can struggle with self control- alcohol, nicotine, gambling, sex, pornography, working, anger, worry…sometime the Holy Spirit convicts us of an area where we never thought we had a lack of self control. In any area where you are able to say, “I could not help it,” you need self control.

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a man who lacks self-control — Proverbs 25:28

Men can be restored

Modern culture has wrongly defined men by what they do, what they own, who they conquer or how strong they seem. Yet the Bible shows us a different standard. Christ was not admired for status—He washed feet (John 13), wept in public (John 11:35), endured rejection (Isaiah 53) and died for others.

BBI at Men Awake launch

The measure of a man is not his conquest, but his character in Christ. His identity is not in performance, but in the finished work of Jesus.

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus — Galatians 3:26

That means you are you are not your failure, you are not your pay-check, you are not your pain, you are not your past.  Circumstances do not define you but you are defined by who you are in Christ.

The truth shall set you free

Men can be restored to their true identify because deliverance and freedom are available in Christ.

Deliverance is not just casting out demons. It is breaking spiritual patterns, healing soul wounds, and restoring men to their purposes. It is for the man who says: “I don’t know why I keep sabotaging my relationships” or “I keep falling into addiction cycles.” Or those who feel like being pursued by something I can’t explain.

That “something” may be spiritual warfare, generational bondage or unhealed trauma. But there is hope. If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed — John 8:36 .

Colossians 1:13  says, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.”

You are not alone, and you are not stuck. Men are called to thrive and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. Men are not just providers or protectors. They are priests in their homes, prophets and leaders of their generation, warriors in the Spirit, sons of the Living God.

“You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” says Romans 8:15.

A healed, whole  and Spirit-filled man becomes a chain-breaker, a generational reformer, and a carrier of legacy.

Isaiah 61:4-9 says, “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.

The epic display of the spiritual battle in Revelation 12, although the dragon pursued the male child, he failed. The child was caught up to God and His throne (Rev. 12:5). That is a picture of salvation, divine rescue—and men’s story too.

A group of men at a prayer session

A prayer for men

God is not done with you. The enemy may have bruised you, but he cannot define you. Your wounds do not disqualify you—they position you for healing and testimony.

You were made for more than survival, more than shame, more than cycles. You were made for sonship, purpose and dominion in Christ.

To every man, who God has purposed to read this post , remember, you are seen you are loved and you are not disqualified. For the fathers let this June be more than celebration—let it be transformation.

Come out of hiding. Lay down the false armour. Step into the healing waters of Christ. There is freedom, wisdom, and strength for you through the cross, through deliverance, and in community.

“Father, I pray for every man reading this. May the chains of ego, shame, pride, and ignorance break in the name of Jesus. May they see themselves as You see them—sons, loved, chosen, and called. Restore their strength, renew their minds and raise them to walk in purpose and victory. Amen.”
